Path to COP15, 2024 phase

Wetlands COP15 is to be hosted by Zimbabwe at the town of Victoria Falls, in the last week of July 2025. It will be followed five months later by UNFCCC COP 29 in Baku, and may be a useful input to that for IOPs and WWN members, especially in Central Asia. We held two visioning workshops in April 2024, which led to a planning document. Here we summarise the steps to October 2024.

The first hard deadline is 18 October 2024, set by the Convention. It is the deadline for:

  1. The submission of National Reports, including Section 4
  1. Nomination of Youth Focal Points (Resolution XIV.12)

These require a concerted effort to engage the network and activate its connections with Contracting Parties.

As of April 2024, we also have a knowledge gap to fill: the perspective of local NGOs within Zimbabwe. Other local knowledge gaps include whether we can arrange group or discounted accommodation near the venue.  We also need to develop a stronger case for fundraising.

Draft resolutions

WWN’s members would like early information on how to create a Draft Resolution. The network would like summaries with CSO perspective.

Consider a draft resolution about the role of CSOs and NGOs in national reports and other Convention work of CPs. YEW are investigating a follow-up Draft Resolution on youth. There may be a follow-up Draft Resolution on gender. Disability and access to wetlands may also be a relevant topic, especially in Africa.

The funding needs are:

  • Attendance by WWN Committee members
  • Supporting regional youth to attend
  • Supporting non-governmental YEW participation

However, we did not go into depth on the fundraising potential, so this requires further work.

The vision follows WWN’s strategic plan to COP15.
